I built ContractMatch after watching a GovCon company I worked for go under. The contracts dried up, and then the paychecks stopped. Two full months of salary, gone. When the bankruptcy was final, good people who’d done good work walked away with nothing.
The thing is, opportunities were out there. We just couldn’t find them fast enough. The company’s pipeline was a black box: someone manually checking SAM.gov when they had time, missing deadlines, overlooking contracts we were perfectly qualified for. By the time leadership realized the pipeline was empty, it was too late to fix.
I’d spent nearly a decade in defense contracting before that — as Chief Architect on the Army’s Joint Battle Command-Platform program, leading teams of up to 150 people building mission-critical systems. I knew how contracts were won. I also knew that small firms didn’t have the BD infrastructure to compete for them consistently. The companies with the best capabilities aren’t always the ones winning work. Often it’s just the ones who see the opportunity and act first.
Heather has been on this journey with me from the start. She spent years as a business analyst, bridging the gap between IT and decision-makers. When the paychecks stopped, she had to put our homeschooling routine on hold to look for work again. She leads our customer outreach and makes sure everything we build makes sense to the people using it.
